This year Jimi Hendrix would have turned 70. Not only, but it’s been 45 years since his incendiary performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Could we afford to let such a glorious and exclusive opportunity to showcase the great Gered Mankowitz‘s most iconic images of the “man with the guitar” slip by?

“The Experience. Jimi Hendrix at Mason’s Yard” is more than just a photo exhibition. For years Mankowitz has been digitally experimenting over his precious images, printing oversize formats and using various techniques such as silk-screens, mtallic papers, 3D lenticulars, light boxes, “Softsharps” with selective focus depending on the viewer’s position and distance, direct mounting on acrylic. All these have contributed to emphasize the image of “the greatest guitar player ever” as an absolute icon of the history of rock.

For his first exhibition of his Hendrix photographs Mankowitz has selected from his extensive archives a great deal of never before seen images to go with the more classic ones. It’s fascinating to think that images that have long been part of the collective imagery such as the one used on the cover of this catalog (last frame on the first roll of film!) come from just two photo sessions done in 1967 in Gered’s studio in Mason’s Yard, in the heart of London. The full story to those shoots is captured in a precious book by Insight Publications, The Experience. Jimi Hendrix at Mason’s Yard, available at our gallery both in the regular edition as well as in its deluxe version of just 500 copies, made even more desirable with an exclusive 11×14 signed and numbered silver gelatin print unavailable otherwise.

This catalog features all the works on show, bu can’t obviously match their size or their precious colours, which you can only appreciate here. One more reason to come and see us in Alba? Gered will attend our opening on March 15, first for a booksigning at the gallery and then for a special evening at the Teatro Sociale G. Busca during which he will share memories and anecdotes regarding these images as well as his extraordinary career. See you then.
