FERRARA, CASTELLO ESTENSE

From February 1st to June 8th, 2025, the beautiful rooms of the Estense Castle will host the exhibition Art Kane. Beyond the Real, curated by Guido Harari and Jonathan Kane. Organized by the Ferrara Arte Foundation and the Art Museums Service of the Municipality of Ferrara in collaboration with Wall of Sound Gallery and the Art Kane Archive, this major retrospective on the American master photographer Art Kane, thirty years since his passing and on his 100th birth anniversary, features over 120 photographs that have contributed to forming the visual imagery of the second half of the twentieth century.

The exhibition explores the various themes of Kane’s eclectic career: from portraiture to famous images of the major music icons of the 1960s and 1970s, to sections focusing on civil commitment (especially the struggle for civil rights of African-Americans and Native Americans, religious fundamentalism, the Vietnam War, the nuclear nightmare of Hiroshima, consumerism, the growing degradation of the environment), visionary existential reflections obtained from “sandwiches” of multiple slides (a pioneering technique in an era that was still analog before Photoshop), to photographic illustrations of Dylan’s and Beatles’ lyrics and finally to fashion, nudes and advertising, without forgetting the evolution of American society up to the 1990s. All captured by such an original and visionary artist who received many well deserved awards and honors, and was featured on the covers of the most prestigious international magazines.
