location
Estense Castle, Ferrara

From February 1 to September 15, 2025, the halls of the Estense Castle will host the exhibition Art Kane. Beyond the real, edited by Guido Harari and Jonathan Kane. Organized by Fondazione Ferrara Arte and the Art Museum Service of the City of Ferrara in collaboration with Alba’s Wall of Sound Gallery and Art Kane Archive, this major retrospective devoted to American photographer Art Kane, 30 years after his death and on the centenary of his birth, presents more than 120 photographs that helped shape the visual imagery of the second half of the 20th century.

The exhibition explores the diverse themes of Kane’s eclectic career: from portraits to celebrated photos of major music icons of the 1960s and 1970s, to a section devoted to civic engagement (especially the struggle for civil rights of African Americans and Native Americans, religious fundamentalism, the Vietnam War, the Hiroshima nuclear nightmare, consumerism, and the growing degradation of the environment) to visionary existential reflections drawn from “sandwiches” of multiple slides (a pioneering technique in an age still analog and without Photoshop), to photographic illustrations of Dylan and Beatles lyrics, and finally to fashion, nudity, and advertising, not forgetting the evolutions of American society up to the 1990s. All fixed by a gaze so original and visionary that it has won honors, awards and the covers of the most prestigious international magazines.
