ART KANE. HARLEM 1958

ART KANE. HARLEM 1958

ART KANE. HARLEM 1958 marks the 60th anniversary of one of the most celebrated images in American history. Now commonly known as A Great Day in Harlem, the infamous shot of 57 jazz musicians gathered outside a brownstone in New York is one of the most imitated images in popular culture, by one of the world’s greatest photographers.

ART KANE. HARLEM 1958 is a visual history of an iconic image including, for the first time, virtually every single frame from the historic shoot. With original text by Art Kane, forewords by Quincy Jones, the legendary Benny Golson, who appears in the photo, and an introduction by Kane's son, musician and photographer Jonathan Kane, the 168-page hardback volume is the story behind the shot.

57 jazz musicians, from the unknown to the world famous, duly assembled at the unlikely hour of 10am at 17 East 126th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues. The group would include Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Thelonius Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie - whose hat was repeatedly stolen by local kids until Kane surrendered and put them in the shot, too.

Esquire magazine published the photo in its January 1959 Golden Age of Jazz special issue, along with a series of Art Kane’s portraits of other jazz giants including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Lester Young and his infamous shot of Charlie Parker's grave. These portraits are also included in the book, with outtakes and other jazz-related images of gospel groups and a young Aretha Franklin, and on set photography of the film "Pete Kelley's Blues”.

Released in November 2018 by Wall of Sound Editions, ART KANE. HARLEM 1958 honors a pivotal moment in American history through the work of one of its most celebrated photographic voices.

CRISTINA ARRIGONI. THE SOUND OF HANDS

CRISTINA ARRIGONI. THE SOUND OF HANDS

Wall Of Sound Editions is proud to introduce you to Cristina Arrigoni’s work and her first book, The Sound of Hands. It features 60 “hands” photos in colour and B/W of a wide array of musicians, such as Johnny Winter, B.B. King, John Mayall, Jackson Browne, Wille Nile, Albert Lee, Charlie Musselwhite, Donovan, and many others. The book also includes portraits of every musican.

Cristina’s work is highly compelling and emotional. Her soulful vision and understanding of the music she loves and of the people who create it, make for a welcome change from your usual music portraiture. As Elliott Murphy writes in the book, “Her photos always manage to magically capture the true grit of a musician's journey, both on stage and off. There is both a hyper-realism and, at the same time, other-worldly quality to her work that, for me at least, ranks among the very best rock photographers of our time. And what could be more essential then the hands of a player, where we try to make love out of steel."

Cristina is very clear re her goal as a photographer, which is “to discover and shine a light on great unknown musicians all around the world and give them visibility through my images. I want to show something about them that stays forever. I look to find beauty wherever it may be, even in the most distressed situations.”

“Cristina is a visionary who somehow has the ability to bring out the soul and the heroic quality in everything she sees through her uncensored lens. She can make a New York City homeless man look like royalty and the wrapped, beaten hands of a drummer speak volumes about passion and drive and love of life. She has a style all her own and her brilliance and greatness are only matched by the humility and grace with which she carries herself.” Willie Nile

"Cristina can make a photograph anywhere, she finds light even in the dark. I have seen her do it. A dressing room , a back alley , a dark hallway or a bar . Its a true art , to do it this way . No fancy lights or studio is necessary , just a kind heart and soulful vision and understanding of the music and people she is photographing. Cristina is so calm , and almost invisible , until she steps into the light with her warm smile." Danny Clinch

“Cristina does with her camera what I do with a guitar. She's the Hendrix of photography.” Randy Hansen

"When you do a shoot with Cristina it's like she becomes a member of the band that has been with you for years. She really captures the inner soul of the artist she is shooting." Dennis Greaves, Nine Below Zero

STONE FREE. THE SUMMER OF LOVE 50TH AND THE PSYCHEDELIC POSTER ART.

STONE FREE. THE SUMMER OF LOVE 50TH AND THE PSYCHEDELIC POSTER ART.

48 pages, softcover, 30x30cm, 25 Euros plus shipping, published by Wall Of Sound Editions to coincide with the exhibition by the same name. Here at Wall Of Sound Gallery we’re happy to celebrate the “Summer of Love” 50th anniversary presenting a selection of original american, british and european posters.

Many revolutions and revelations of the five years between 1966 and 1970 still have a surprisingly huge appeal and cross-generational relevance. As the Beatles sang in All You Need Is Love (“there’s nothing you can do that can’t be done”), this was a “revolution in the head” that created a pioneering cross-pollination of all of the arts, music, films, fashion, design and media. New concepts like consumerism, environmentalism, individualism and mass communication, became common while a utopian idealism provided both collectivity and connectivity via the underground press, pirate radio stations, political protest groups, way before mobile phones, personal computers and Internet.

Psychedelia, they called it. It was all about imagination, nonconformity, individuality and freedom. Art, music, design, drugs, multimedia events and concert light-shows created a unique aesthetic that promoted an expanding consciousness, a state of sensory overload (Dr Leary’s “Turn On! Tune In! Drop-Out!”) and a utopian belief in a better future at hand. All You Need Is Love! We Are Golden, We Are Stardust! Let The Sunshine In! Get Together! Imagine!

Musicians were crucial in all this. Music had indeed the power to change the world and it happened on June 16-18, 1967, at the Monterey International Pop Festival, where Jimi Hendrix got fired to his Stratocaster, changing the rock history. The psychedelic revolution also marked a new golden age of poster design, which originated in San Francisco. Rock music and posters fed off each other, as the latter were filled with freewheeling shapes, bright acid colours and all sorts of ornamental patterns from Art Nouveau to Pop Art.

Stone Free is a selection of art from different designers who collaborated with the new temples of sound, Bill Graham’s Fillmore West and Fillmore East, Chet Helms‘ Avalon Ballroom and Russ Gibb’s Grande Ballroom in Detroit: Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Wes Wilson, Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, Lee Conklin, David Singer, Randy Tuten, Bonnie MacLean, David Byrd, Gary Grimshaw, John Van Hamersveld. Even Milton Glaser, the Godfather of graphic design, gave his blessing to the movement, designing the iconic Dylan poster that was featured in Dylan’s Greatest Hits album, in 1966. The exhibition and the book also shows the british Michael English and Nigel Waymouth, collectively known as Hapshash And The Coloured Coat, Alan Aldridge, the Sydney-born Martin Sharp and the Germans Mati Klarwein and Gunther Kieser.

Of course, nowhere was the effect of psychedelics on design more clear than in album sleeves, from The Beatles’s Sgt Pepper, the Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties’ Request to the legendary yellow banana invented by Andy Warhol for the Velvet Underground & Nico album cover. Herb Greene photographed Jefferson Airplane against a wall of hieroglyphics for their Surrealistic Pillow album cover.

Genius lens-man Art Kane created icons of the era’s most glorious rock stars, from Dylan to Janis Joplin, Cream, the Stones, Jefferson Airplane and the Who. Photographers Jim Marshall, Bob Seidemann, Gene Anthony, Baron Wolman, Robert Altman, Ed Caraeff, Joel Brodsky, Guy Webster, Stephen Paley, Henry Diltz, Amalie R. Rotschild, Elaine Mayes, Lisa Law, all contributed to documenting this “long, strange trip” for posterity.

HEROES | BOWIE | SUKITA

HEROES | BOWIE | SUKITA

40 pages, soft-cover, 30x30cm (12x12 inches), 25 Euros plus shipping, published by Wall Of Sound Gallery for Masayoshi Sukita's exhibition Heroes | Bowie | Sukita. With a friendhip and creative collaboration that has spanned over 40 years, Sukita and Bowie have gone through changes of identity and look that have marked more than one era, from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, let alone their most iconic image ever: the cover shot for the 1977 Heroes album. Bowie has once described Sukita as “a committed and brilliant artist, that I may call Maestro”, but the photographer has never thought of Bowie as a friend or a subject for his photographs, but rather simply as "David Bowie".

The secret of Sukita's images of Bowie is a rather natural and delicate approach to Bowie's everchanging complexity. This exhibition features 37 photographs, including a series of portraits taken in London in 1972 and in New York in 1973, as well as concert photos taken in Japan in the same year. Add to these the iconic images and several outtakes from the Heroes shoot, as well as photographs from a trip to Kyoto, in Japan, from 1980 and some more recent portraits from 1989 and 2002 for the promotion of the Heathen album. Among these a shot a life-size mannequin that Sukita had made in order to create new images without bothering his "original" subject. Heroes | Bowie | Sukita is a priceless kaleidoscope that confirms once more how constant change is the only key to remain deeply true to yourself.
